Androgenetic alopecia

Androgenetic alopecia (male pattern baldness) starts for men mainly on the crown and secretions. For women with androgenetic alopecia, hair density is reduced, especially cranially, while the front hairline remains intact. Women do not usually go completely bald like men, but the remaining hairs have a thinner structure, are less strong, and therefore more likely to fall off. The scalp of patients with androgenetic alopecia looks completely normal.

Hugo is having problems with androgenetic alopecia

It can happen to any man: going bald. However, not every man deals with it lightly. Hugo, a 50-year-old man, suffers from the most common form of hair loss for men: androgenetic alopecia. “In recent years, I have lost a considerable amount of hair. I once had a nice bunch of hair, but now I am slowly turning bald. Because of my hair loss, I’m feeling more insecure, and instead of going to parties I prefer to stay at home.”

The challenge

“Many hairs remained in my brush or the shower drain, but it seemed temporary, and I expected that plenty of hairs would grow back. But after a while, I noticed that when I did my hair, it looked less full. What I found much more annoying, however, was that I began to see my scalp through my hair. And when I wore a parting, that white strip of skin stood out very much among my brown hair.”

In the end, Hugo started a topical treatment with 5% minoxidil in an alcoholic solution. The effects of the alcoholic minoxidil treatment were moderate and he was not fond of the alcoholic solution. “After I applied the minoxidil solution, the preparation dripped off my scalp and left an unpleasant alcoholic smell.” As Hugo’s hair loss increases, he consults his doctor about alternative treatment options.

The solution

Hugo’s doctor decided to prescribe a product that helps against hair loss: Espumil. Espumil™ is offered by Fagron and is a creamy, drip-free, foam formula with a light skin feel that is highly suitable for application to hairy skin, such as the scalp. This easy-to-apply, skin-friendly agent maximizes Hugo’s comfort for optimal compliance and treatment results.

“After 3 months of using it, I noticed an increase in the growth of my hair, thickness, and next to that I am very happy with the easy-to-apply foam. Since my hair is growing back, I feel much more confident about myself, I almost feel reborn. I dare to look in the mirror again, walk the streets without fear, and hop from party to party.”

Compounding

  • The compound consists of a triple therapy of latanoprost 0.005%, and minoxidil 5% in Espumil™, and Prostaquinon™ 3% in Espumil™
  • The pharmacy uses the convenient pre-weighed packages of latanoprost, and Prostaquinon™ to efficiently assemble the prescription.
  • The formulation is dosed into Fagron’s foam dispenser which turns Espumil™ into a foam.
