Eva's Case

Eva's Case

Eva (2 years) is frequently spitting up and crying after feeding and her parents notice weight loss. After consultation with her pediatrician Eva is diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). To effectively help Eva, her pediatrician wants to treat Eva with omeprazole.

The Challenge
Because of her age, Eva is not able to take the omeprazole as a tablet or capsule, nor from a spoon. With sorbitol containing suspending vehicles, stomach distress and diarrhoea are seen and added sugars promote tooth decay.
To maintain stability and ensure effective therapeutic outcome, omeprazole requires an alkaline aqueous environment. Traditional formulations of omeprazole in sodium bicarbonate 8.4% impart a bitter, unpleasant taste.

A thickened omeprazole suspension would improve therapy effectiveness, as thickened feeds are associated with a decrease in the number of vomiting episodes.

The Solution
Eva’s physician calls the pharmacist and explains the challenge. The pharmacist is quick to respond, as he has the Omeprazole & SyrSpend® SF Alka kit readily available.
The Omeprazole & SyrSpend® SF Alka kit has excellent taste-masking properties and a neutral flavor, translating to greater patient satisfaction and improved compliance. The Omeprazole & SyrSpend® SF Alka kit offers all the tools needed to prepare an omeprazole suspension in two simple steps. No more weighing and no need for additional containers or dispensing tools. The use of omeprazole powder rather than crushing tablets ensures ease of use and uniform mixing and improve patient compliance. A stability study has shown 60 days stability of omeprazole suspended in SyrSpend® SF Alka [1].

A simple process of adding omeprazole and water to the bottle of SyrSpend® SF Alka powder enables the pharmacist to prepare a stable omeprazole suspension in just minutes for Eva. Without crushing tablets, with easy uniform mixing. The Fagron Omeprazole & SyrSpend® SF Alka kit offers all the tools the pharmacist needs.

The Cure
Eva is growing well. Every day her parents give her a fitted dose of the omeprazole suspension. Dosing and administration are facilitated by an oral syringe. Low osmolality of the SyrSpend® SF Alka reduces the risk of stomach distress and diarrhoea seen with other sorbitol containing suspending vehicles. The suspension is free from alcohol, parabens, sorbitol, sugars, gluten and colorants, and therefore suitable for young Eva.
